Portuguese: Irregular Verbs
These tables include the
major irregular verbs found in Portuguese. How these tenses are applied
is briefly discussed in the section Verb Tense Usage, and
in further depth in the Quick
Grammar and the Lessons.
Irregular verbs do not
follow the expected formula explained briefly in the Regular
Verb tables. It is strongly recommended that you understand how
to form and use regular verbs before handling irregular verbs.
Please note that there
is an entire class of "irregular" verbs not included in the
tables below. These verbs are often called orthography-changing or stem-changing
verbs. They take regular endings,
but alter their stem (the verb falar
to speak has the stem fal- and
the ending -ar). You can learn more about
these verbs in the Quick
Grammar.
The compound future with ir
to go, the compound perfect forms with ter
to have, and the compound progressive with estar
to be are not listed here, since they involve the infinitive
or the present participle of the irregular verb (both listed below).
Note that Inf.
= infinitive, Imp. = imperative, Subj. = subjunctive, and Ind.
= indicative
